Learn English well Through Listening and writing

Author: Efren Spence

Since the first time when English became popular and used as an global language, a large amounts of people have begun learning it. Some people have learned relatively good English, while others may have learned some trivial things in it. Now so many people still want to get some good ways to learn this language. Certainly we have them today.
Listening is one effective way to learn English. But how to listen and what kinds of materials should be used to learn this language?

For the very beginners, they need to understand the basic elements in this language, like pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, phrase and so on. When they learn such things, they need to try to write them as frequently as possible. But everyday such learners need to listen for a while, say 30 minutes. You see, when you listen to something you have seen, it is very easy to remember it. And at the same time they improve their listening comprehension to some extent. At least they can practise their pronunciation, for they can get very standard pronunciation from the listening tapes or the CDs.

But to the intermediate learners, they can try to listen to the materials that are more practical. For instance, they can listen to some news, movies, and dramas. Such materials are not very easy to understand of course. It needs one's patience much more than he or she has expected. And they learners need to try to listen for a longer time rather than just 30 minutes for the beginners. They don't need to find too many materials, what they do is to find some pieces that can be suitable. Then try to use them to listen again and again until they think they have understood them fully.

Besides, people can use writing to learn English. When you learn something, you should try to put it into your passage. For example, once you learn a phrase "a piece of cake". Then give it a sentence, like "Learning English is but a piece of cake." Certainly it is not easy to learn English. And some people who have learned so many useful things don't often use them. That's why a lot of people can't learn English well.

Maybe other times people prefer to learn by a software, like Rosetta Stone English which can tell you English natually. And Rosetta Stone can also tell people other languages, like Spanish, Chinese. Rosetta Stone Spanish and Rosetta Stone Chinese are available once people have intention to learn them.

English Spelling Rules: Adding Prefixes and Suffixes

Author: Amy Nutt

Knowing proper spelling is very important for a number of reasons. First of all, when words cannot be spoken from our mouths we can write them down. If these words are not spelled properly, then that communication is compromised. Since communicating in writing is very important in many of our jobs, it is important that we know some very important grammar rules. Second, many use writing to write down their ideas. If proper grammar isn't used, then those who like to write in diaries and journals would not understand what they wrote when reading it years down the road. So not only is writing important when communicating with others, it is also important when communicating with ourselves.

Below are rules regarding the addition of prefixes and suffixes to words.

Prefixes

Prefixes are those additions that usually do not change the spelling of the word. The prefix is attached to the word despite any consonant duplications, accents, or syllabication. Examples are:

- Unavailable - the prefix is the "un" and it is easy to see that the remainder of the word, available, does not change.

- Misspell - Ironically, this word is the most misspelled word. A great way to remember how to spell misspell is that "mis" is the prefix and "spell" is the main word. The spelling of the main word does not change at all, but it is amazing how often this word is not spelled correctly.

Suffixes

When adding a suffix, the main part of the word usually changes the spelling of the word, but sometimes there are exceptions. Take the word treatment, for instance. "ment" is the suffix of the word and "treat" is the original word. Simply add the "ment" to "treat" and you have treatment without any spelling modifications.

For those words that have a short vowel sound and end with a single consonant, the consonant is doubled when adding on a suffix that starts with a vowel. These suffixes canbe ed, ing, or er. Some examples:

- Biggest- big is the main word that has a short vowel sound and ends in a singal consonant. As a result, we add another "g" and then the "est" since it starts with a vowel.

There are exceptions, though. There are some words that end in r,x,w or y and don't require doubling. Such a word is blowing. The suffix is "ing," but because the single consonant is a 'w', there is no need for doubling.

If there are two consonants at the end of your main word, or two vowels, the consonant doesn't need to be doubled. An example is the word keeper. The vowels are e+e, so the "er" can be added on without doubling the consonant. Another thing to keep in mind is that when a suffix is added that begins with a vowel and the main words ends with a silent "e", that silent "e" should be dropped like it is in the words pricing and surprising. However, if the suffix used begins with a consonant, the silent "e" should be kept such as in the words likeness and advancement.

It is also necessary to drop the final "Y" in the main word when adding a suffix if the "Y" has a consonant before it. The word worry becomes worried and supply becomes supplies. But this rule does not apply to words ending in why in which the "ing" suffix is added. Examples are: Crying and obeyed.

It is important to know the rules regarding prefixes and suffixes. It is easy to see that there is more involved with adding a suffix than a prefix, but with practice suffixes can be added on without even thing about them. These rules are vital for effective communication, so knowing the rules is very important.

Learning Word Emphasis and Syllable Stress in English

Author: Ryan Kent-Temple

Word and syllable emphasis is more important than many people think. There are a lot of languages that use this emphasis in their everyday words. However, when you are trying to improve your English, this is an issue that can not be overlooked.

Word emphasis or word stress is a way of pronouncing an English word when spoken by a native speaker. The emphasis in a word, if pronounced incorrectly, can actually be mis-interpreted as another word. Quite possibly, someone might not be able to understand you at all. We're going to take a look at some examples and ways that you might be able to determine how and where to put your emphasis on certain syllables.

First, I want to explain to you what  syllable is and how you can determine how many syllables are in a word. A syllable, simply put, is a part of a word consisting of a vowel with consonants surrounding it, usually prior to the vowel. For example, the word SPOKEN. There are two syllables in this word - SPO and KEN.

A syllable is a natural break in a word. Try saying the word "Spoken" just like it is above. Say it a couple times in that manner, then say the word normally. You should be able to feel the natural break that I am speaking of. Here is a list of words separated by syllables. Repeat each one a few times in its broken form, then say the word naturally. After you finish, I'll continue speaking on the word emphasis or stress. Here is a trick for learning the syllables in other words: Clap for every vowel you say in a word.

(clap)   (clap)
GRAMM - AR...............GRAMM - AR...............GRAMM - AR................GRAMM - AR          Grammar

(clap) (clap)
IM - PROVE...............IM - PROVE................IM - PROVE...................IM - PROVE         Improve

(clap) (clap)
ENG - LISH................ENG - LISH..................ENG - LISH..................ENG - LISH           English

(clap) (clap) (clap)(clap)
DIC - TION - AR -  Y..................DIC - TION - AR -  Y..................DIC - TION - AR -  Y     Dictionary

Word Emphasis or Word Stress is determined using the syllables as a basis. Word Emphasis is not something that is taught, but can definitely be learned using a proactive method of learning English. Like I have said many times before, listening is the key to this.

When you listen to spoken English, you will naturally be hearing the emphasis on words. This is learned subconsciously. Which is why you must listen to English as much as you can. I don't suggest trying to listen to the emphasis intentionally. You probably will not be able to hear it or understand when you do hear it. But the point of my article here is to explain what word emphasis or word stress is and how, when practicing pronunciation, you can make sure you are understood in your spoken English.

When pronouncing an English word, we use what is called Word Emphasis or stress. There was a movie that pointed out how the word emphasis can be confusing.

The person says "ASS es the window" but the word is assESS. The word ass in English is considered a bad word. So you can see that when the word emphasis is used incorrectly, you may alienate your listeners.

When you see the capitalized letters here, that is where you put the emphasis or stress on the syllable. (stay tuned in to World English Club because this will be easier to understand once I have added audio) When you put stress on the syllable, that means that you should emphasize that specific syllable. Emphasis is done in these three ways: Longer in duration, higher in pitch, and louder in volume. Try saying the word emphasis in these three ways.

EMphasis

emPHAsis

emphaSIS

First of all, do you notice that the capital letters in each set of words are the syllables? That is because the syllables are the basics for the word stress or word emphasis. Next, you should have noticed that each time you said a different word, it gave the word a different feeling.

Learning and listening to English and the word emphasis on syllables will help you learn how to speak more smoothly and fluently. This is a lesson often overlooked by teachers and learners of the English language.  So continue to listen to English and start slowly with this topic. Soon you will improve your spoken English to a point where you will sound like a native speaker of the language.

English Learning Software - Write Error Free English Instantly!

Author: Jane Sumerset

While Spanish may be the language that is growing most quickly across the world, English remains the language of the future. There are a number of different reasons for this that encompass travel, business, and worldwide trends. Some of the more prominent reasons that English is considered to be the language of the future include the following.

* The Language of the Sciences: English is currently the language of the sciences. Most prominent research papers are currently written in English, or written in another language and thereafter translated to English. As long as the scientific community continues to embrace the language, there is no reason to think that this trend will be changing course anytime soon.

* Most Business Is Done In English: English has become the language of business as well. While the dollar may be currently weaker than in recent years, for many years the United States was viewed as the premier nation in which foreign countries desired to do business. This, combined with the fact that England also had a very strong currency and is a financial powerhouse as well, made English the most common language in which to do business. Much as with science, unless business starts to be conducted in Spanish, there is no reason to think that English is not the language of the future.

* Technology: Because some of the world's largest technology companies are based in the United States, these companies naturally are going to gear most of their new technology towards English speaking individuals. In fact, all of the popular programming languages are coded in English. With technology companies gearing themselves toward English speaking individuals it is hard to foresee us heading in any other direction.

While learning English can seem complicated and difficult, there is no reason that you should not start learning English as soon as possible. The language isn't going anywhere; in fact, experts estimate that the number of English speakers in the world will double over the next 50 years.

When it comes to speaking a language, once you have picked up certain habits, it can often be difficult to break them, or to re-learn how to speak without using these habits. Many bilingual individuals who speak English translate sentence structures over to the English language, when the language simply does not work in the same way as other commonly spoken languages. Learning it right the first time around can ensure that you speak it correctly throughout your lifetime, and will help you in multiple facets of life including travel, business, and literature. Some of the reasons that learning to speak English correctly the first time will be to your benefit include the following.

* It is Difficult To Re-train Yourself: Re-training or Re-teaching yourself sentence structure, verb usage, and other common mistakes that can be made when learning a new language can be very difficult, and many individuals struggle with this concept. Oftentimes, once you learn something, you may never be able to learn it another way again. This is why it is important to learn how to speak English correctly the first time around.

* It Saves Money: Learning to speak the language correctly the first time around ensures that you never have to shell out any more money to speech experts again. Many individuals who have to learn how to structure their sentences in a foreign language all over again are forced to pay thousands of dollars to re-learn what they have already studied.

* It Saves Time: Re-learning how to structure your sentences in English can be very time-consuming. Ensuring that you learn proper conjugation and sentence structure from the beginning helps to ensure that you never have to spend your valuable time re-learning what you have already learned.

Learning English correctly starts with a teacher. If you do not have the correct resources at hand to learn the language, you will never be able to learn it correctly. Online software allow you to take all the time that you need to learn proper grammar when learning the English language, and to learn the language from some of the foremost language experts in the world who contributed to the design of the software. Should All World Leaders Speak in English?

Author: A Nutt

Language allows people to communicate, learn, and grow which is the fundamental underpinning of society's progress. In recent years, more people have begun discussing the question of whether all world leaders should speak English. Whether they should speak English or not depends on if there is a need for a common language, and if English is becoming one of the most commonly spoken languages throughout the world.

Many experts believe that there should be one common language that can be used as a method of conversing with people from all countries. It can reduce misunderstandings and help build bridges between cultures. English is the leading worldwide language in such areas as entertainment, science, business, and diplomacy. Approximately 85% of all information in the world is available in English. As well, English is studied as a second language more than any other language of the world. In most careers, speaking English can help one get a promotion, open the door for more opportunities, and earn more money. Governments around the world are providing funding for their citizens to learn English. The reason is not because English is a superior language, but because the language has spread across the globe. For instance, there are more people in China who speak English than in the U.S.A.

Many believe that the proliferation of the English language throughout the world is a result of America's rise as the central superpower. International relations and business are basically tied to the United States. America is an English speaking country so other countries have recognized the value of speaking English when conversing with Americans. The result has been a surge in people learning the English language. According to a recent report by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, "between 96 and 100 percent of people in China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam believe children should learn English." Many see learning English as an essential tool to success. Chris Gibson, the British Council's director for South India, "aims to have every South Indian speaking it by 2010, at which point he believes that English will be a codified world language" In 2007, the International Herald Tribune stated that "English is spoken in some form by three times as many non-native speakers as native speakers." As well, the IHT wrote, "English is a first language for 400 million people, and a fluent second for between 300 and 500 million more.

The trend to learn English suggests that the use of the language will be increasing in the coming years. The Director of Asia for the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that "By 2100, the world will go from a 7,000-language planet to a couple of hundred languages at the most...English will be the major medium of communication in many countries."

It is projected that half the world's people will be speaking English by 2015. Many people believe English is on the path to becoming the world's unofficial language The spread of the English language throughout the world should not only cause world leaders to consider learning the language, but it should also cause the citizens to consider taking advantage of learning English in order keep all opportunities in life available.

How Online English Courses Benefit All Learning Needs

Author: Adriana Noton

The benefits of online English courses reach far and wide. With the difficulty of the language posing numerous stumbling blocks even for those with the native English tongue, strong instruction that works is essential. Whether you are taking English as a second language or you need to increase your communication skills to be a better professional, online courses offer you a great freedom as well as a good opportunity. Kids needing additional English lessons can find that these are the classes that get them over the hump.

Online courses give you the freedom to structure your classes around your day. Some of us keep some pretty wild schedules. There are few classes that allow you morning study one day, afternoon the next, and then evening on the third day. Structuring your classes into your schedule helps you ensure that you will attend your classes online.

Of course, taking English classes online also gives you different modes of learning that aren't as readily available in other class formats. You can find different ways to study, including games, audio and visual stimulation, and sometimes even an online tutor. The host of various tools for learning and completing assignments gives you a chance to push through and accelerate in a manner that is comfortable for you.

English as a second language can be terribly frustrating. Most of the languages around the world consider English to be backward when it comes to the structure of sentences. The way the language places adverbs and adjectives can be opposite when compared to most other languages. This often presents a challenge for those who are trying to master the English language.

Of course, there are plenty of students that are struggling through their school work as they attempt to find the proper way to write and speak their native tongue. In a world full of slang, acronyms, and now with l33t speak (pronounced leet) on the rise it's no wonder that many individuals end their sentences with prepositions and don't understand where a possessive apostrophe belongs. There are many rules of the language, as well as exceptions to those rules, that are not practiced in daily communications among younger generations.

Those of us who are 35 and under have grown up in a world where English was considered the most valuable language to learn and yet our households and friends reflected a totally different language. This can cause issues when it comes to completing high school English classes and can reflect on SAT scores.

When you find a need for English classes one of the best places to look is naturally online. You will need to select a course that is appropriate for your needs. If you're trying to help a struggling student you may want a different course than someone trying to learn conversational English.

Make sure the online English courses come with some sort of support. Many of the programs offer help through chat as well as over the phone. If you are having trouble, it's highly beneficial to have someone to help work out the problem.

Biggest Obstacles When Learning English

Author: A Nutt

There are an estimated 6, 000 languages spoken throughout the world. With so many languages, it may surprise many to learn that learning the English language can be one of the more difficult tasks. There are a number of reasons why students encounter obstacles when they are learning English.

Pronunciation: The English language has no exact pronunciation. Some words contain 'silent' letters which means they are not spoken. Some letters may be pronounced differently such as 'ah' for 'A'. Other languages such as the German language vocalize every letter and have only one pronunciation. How the stress is placed on certain German consonants or vowels can make English such a difficult language to learn. There are hard and soft consonants like 'c' taking on a 'k' sound which depends on the context of which they are spoken. There are silent letters in some words and there are some consonants that when put together will project an entirely different sound. (i.e....'th') The odd combinations and changing rules in the pronunciation of words makes English much more difficult to learn.

Grammar: The succession of nouns, adjectives, and adverbs has their own particular order for the many different languages in the world. With the English language, the order can vary. For instance, Chinese learners tend to write indirect sentences. For example: "The boy was bitten by the neighbour's dog." instead of "The neighbour's dog bit the boy." To write proper sentences and passages, English learners have to learn a new and different way of using grammar. Assimilating English into a conversation can be difficult because learners have to use different sentence structures than their native language.

Verb Tense: Some languages have very narrow connotations of verb tense. Often the use of present and past verb tense can make learning English quite complicated. For instance, in certain situations, it may be appropriate to use any of the following tenses: present; past; and future. The verb 'sing' can be used in the following forms depending on tense: 'sing,' 'sang,' or 'sung.'

Learning Tools: Many students are only taught to learn from books so they do not have the chance to practice the speaking language. They tend to lack the confidence when they try to speak the English language in public. Reading aloud can help them improve their English speaking abilities

Slang: The use of slang is common in the English language. Words, terms, and phrases do not have the same meaning that they would normally have in a dictionary definition. Learning the language requires learning the use of slang which means understanding that different slang terms make English an almost entirely different language that has to be learned. Sometimes terms that are used are not even found in the English dictionary. This can make difficult for someone not familiar with the language. This is where television, movies, magazines, and the radio become helpful tools when learning the language.

Gender and Culture: A person's cultural practices can affect their ability to learn English. For instance, in some cultures a woman tends to be the one to stay home and raise the children. They are less likely to be interacting with English speakers unlike a man who would be out in the workforce interacting with English speakers.

The English language is one of the most widely spoken languages. The inability to speak or understand the native English language can seem frustrating. Although the complexities of learning the language may seem overwhelming, the benefits are well worth the effort. Reading, speaking, and listening to others speak English are an important part of learning the language.

Translation Software - Learn English Easily As You Translate It!

Author: Laurianne Surchoix

If you learn English, you will have plenty of new opportunities to make money. This is because proper English is quickly becoming a necessity in a world ruled by communication and information. This is also because, quite frankly, the English language continues to suffer a decline in terms of people who actually use it properly. This may be because of the advent of text messaging and digital communication, but you may also notice that a lot of people - even native speakers of the English language - tend to make grammatical, syntactical and even spelling errors in the simplest statements. If you learn how to use English properly, you will be a hot commodity indeed.

If you know how to use proper English, you can be very effective as a content writer. As you may be aware, someone has to make content available on the Internet for other people to read. The Internet would be pretty useless as an information resource without written content. In fact, the Internet would be reduced to nothing more than a data transmitter - in effect, a telephone. Since content is accessed all over the world, it very often needs to be written in the English language.

Another way you could gain profit is by blogging. Instead of producing content for other Web sites, you can put up a blog and start producing your own content. Of course, you will not be paid for actually writing. However, you will be compensated for advertising. Many bloggers today have managed to turn their passions into profits.

You could also profit by passing on the knowledge by becoming an online tutor. There are a lot of people who are eager to improve their English skills, and you can help them. Of course, in order to become an effective tutor you have to truly know what you are teaching. This means you need to always be improving your English skills.

Learning English is not just about refining your language; it is about finding ideal opportunities. So why not grab the opportunity today and learn English? It may just help you to find great new opportunities to make money and bring you a step closer to your dream.

Every language reflects the culture of the people who use it. There is no such thing as a static language; each and every language is continually evolving, changed by people as they see fit. This is because people are also constantly changing, with new ideas coming to light constantly needing new words for them to be communicated. In today's digital age, when technology and thinking have accelerated in their development, the English language has also experienced rapid evolution.

Free English translation software lacks quality most of the time. Advanced software is much more recommended in a professional environment as it holds a regularly updated database of words.

When you take a look at the English language today, it certainly reflects our times. First of all, you will see just how extensively English is used today throughout the entire world. This is reflected in the number of words that have origins in other languages - words such "sushi," which define very specific cultural things and ideas and yet are used by English-speaking people, are assimilated into the English language. This simply shows how the world is quickly becoming united in terms of culture and language.

Another way that the English language is changed is through the introduction of new words related to technology. Think about the word "Google" - a few years ago, people would not have known what you meant if you wanted them to "Google" something. Today, people transform the English language by creating new words to accommodate new technologies and to communicate the experiences brought on by those technologies. English today is actually more dynamic because of this.

Although the face of the English language is constantly changing, its heart is not. It still has the same rules as before, and people who know the basics of English can definitely quickly understand its form today. Learning English will enable people to easily adapt to any changes in the language. Learning English is all about getting a solid base and learning about the heart of the language. Through this, you will have something to work with in the quest for a way to communicate with the world around you. By learning the basics of English, you will be able to "catch up" and use the language as it is meant to be used today.

Immersion Helps to Learn English:

Author: A. Nutt

Immersion programs put students into a situation where they must not only speak and understand, but must think in English. These programs are developed so that the student must speak and hear the language every day and in every social situation. The length of the programs varies but they all provide the student with the opportunity to use what they have learned in practical situations. It also allows the student to hear different variations of voice tones and inflections when listening to English speakers.

More often than not, immersion cuts down on the amount of accent that is ultimately used by the student. They are living every day in an English-only environment so they can practice using familiar and unfamiliar words on a daily basis. Some students who take advantage of total immersion programs have little or no experience with the English language. Some have varying degrees of experience. Either way, the student must begin to formulate thoughts that are expressed in English rather than their native language. It also allows them a lot of opportunity to hear the language being spoken in a variety of situations and by many different people.

Many people come to the United States speaking only their native tongue. Of course, there are some that never do learn much of the language, but those who immerse themselves in society and the language catch on pretty quickly.
