Word of the Day

Vocabulary Bingo Cards

Author: Sunil Tanna

Learning and increasing vocabulary is an important part of education and K-12 education in particular. Children tend to learn many words from hearing them spoken around them, and learn further words from general reading, but manyteachers also believe it helps for children to be specifically taught to learn useful words and their definitions.   One idea that can help make this a fun and exciting idea for students is introducing vocabulary games, and one game in particular that can be played for this purpose is vocabulary bingo.

The way that vocabulary bingo is played is:

1. Each student is given a bingo card (also known as "bingo board" or "bingo worksheet") containing a grid of squares. Each square in the grid is printed with a different word.

2. The teacher, playing the part of bingo caller, reads out the definition for a word. The students then attempt to find the matching square on their bingo card, and if they find it, cover that square with a counter.

3. The process of teacher reading out definitions, and the students trying to find matches continues until one student achieves a winning pattern (for example a line of five countered covered squares - although the definition of a winning pattern can be varied) and calls out "Bingo!"

Vocabulary bingo is not only a lot of fun, but really can help students learn new words. What's more, the same idea can be adapted to other educational purposes, for example, teaching parts of speech (example bingo call: "a verb beginning with P"), math or even foreign language words. All that is needed is a set of bingo cards containing the particular items that the teacher chooses for the particular lesson - and these can very easily be printed using a PC and some bingo card maker software.

Learning Spanish - Crash and Burn or Fly and Learn!

Author: Peter Williams

What are your needs? Why do you want to learn Spanish?

Why do you want to learn Spanish? For fun or for real? Do you just want to learn the basics of the language just for fun? Or do you want to learn to speak, read and write Spanish fluently so that you can live and work in a Spanish speaking country? This is important to the way you approach your Spanish classes and to which classes you choose.

The a€œjust for funa€ students

If it's just for fun - what I call a€œtravel Spanish,a€ then I would not recommend intensive classes at all. The intensive classes are designed for people, who want to learn a great deal in a very short period of time. These classes are far from fun. Try instead and find a Spanish course that is six to ten hours a week. And start by enrolling for a couple of weeks. That should be enough to get a feel for the Spanish language and learn the basic grammar.

Then when you have done your homework, I would arm myself with a good tourist phrase book and a wide smile and head out into the streets of Barcelona. You will quickly learn a few basics, that you can use for travelling and meeting people, and have a fun time.

The a€œseriousa€ students

If your goal is to learn to speak Spanish more fluently, usually because you want to live and work in Spain or another Spanish speaking country, then you must take a far more serious approach to your Spanish classes. Here are some tips for getting the most of intensive Spanish classes, so that you will flourish and learn and not crash and burn.

Don't look for the easy route!

Many people, who come to Spain to live and work, do not really learn Spanish because they a€œwanta€ to. They learn because they a€œneeda€ to. So naturally they look for an easy way to learn. A fast way. A painless way. Sorry to disappoint you. There is no easy way. In other words - No pain no Spain. (Ouch... bad pun, but I could not resist it! :-) Here are a few tips for the a€œseriousa€ Spanish students.

Do it now!

If you are learning Spanish because you need to, then it will never be much fun, so my advice is to get the hard part over with and learn as much Spanish as you can at the beginning of your stay in Spain. Once you are settled in, working full-time and have an active social life, then you will not have time or inclination to take many intensive Spanish courses. Most Spanish schools in Barcelona offer 4 hours a day intensive courses either in the morning or afternoon. Just sign up for 4 or 8 weeks.

Be prepared for hard work.

Do not underestimate the effort needed. The pace is gruelling and you will need to show up every day to keep up. Almost all Spanish schools in Barcelona and Spain use the immersion technique, which means that everything in the classroom is in Spanish, all the time, even for beginners, even on the first day! There are not even explanations in English in the text books. This means lots of concentration and home study every day!

Don't overlook the grammar.

Speaking a language without using grammar is like building a house without a foundation. A strong foundation of grammar will ensure, that you can keep adding more levels to your a€œSpanisha€ building. But a bad foundation makes a house of cards and one day your building will topple. Grammar is kind of boring and hard work. But a a€œI don't need grammara€ attitude is a short term, lazy solution. Grammar is half the language and you will end up speaking a€œhalfa€ Spanish, if you don't learn it from the first day.

Prepare for your Spanish course.

Unless you have some knowledge of language similar to Spanish, (Portuguese, Italian, French) or have a good knowledge of your own language and its grammar then I would recommend preparing a little for an intensive Spanish course in Spain.

You could consider having a few Spanish lessons in your home country. The teacher's explanations and instructions will probably be in your own language, just like in primary school. I would also recommend that you buy a Spanish study book in English (or your own language) that explains Spanish grammar and do a little bit of self-study before your start your class.

When you start your Spanish course in Barcelona, you might invest in a few extra private lessons with a Spanish teacher, who speaks English and who can explain a few basic things in English, if you are having trouble following the course. The Spanish school in Barcelona, that you have chosen should be able to help you with this.

Daily study tips for better results .

Show up for all classes! Make it your goal.

Do your homework. Every day. An effective rule is half the time at home as you spend at the Spanish school.

Compete with yourself, not with your classmates. If you are in trouble or falling behind in your Spanish classes then talk to your teacher.

Clear your head and calendar. Barcelona is a party town and your friends from back home will undoubtedly announce their arrival for fun filled party weekends. Try and postpone most parties until you have finished your Spanish course. There just isn't time for it if you want to keep up.

Buy the books if possible so that you can make your own notes in them and keep them for future reference.

Buy a good dictionary, but not too big and heavy. A small, but good quality pocket dictionary is better investment, because you will be carrying it a lot!

Be realistic and you won't be disappointed.

It will feel as if you are hardly learning anything in the beginning weeks no matter how hard you study. This is because Spanish is usually spoken at light speed and your untrained ear for the language and weak conversation skills are just not up to the challenge. Don't worry. It will come.

But don't overestimate the results of a few weeks of intensive Spanish classes either. Many people assume they will be able to speak fluent Spanish a matter of weeks. They usually book a 4 week Spanish course. Sorry to burst that bubble too. In 1 month you can really learn a lot, especially if you put in the work and show up every day. At the end of that period you will be able to have short conversations and understand a lot. But to speak really fluent Spanish? 6 months to a year is more realistic, and 2 months is the minimum for a really good start!

Suerte!

Bingo Worksheet Generator

Author: Sunil Tanna

Most of us tend to think of bingo as a game played as a leisure activity, mostly by older people. However, it also the case that variations on the standard game of bingo are now being used by many teachers and educators. Bingo has in fact been applied to teaching a wide variety of different subjects including reading, English, foreign languages such as French, Spanish, German and Italian, and math, science, history and geography.

Educational variants of bingo are generally played with the teacher taking the part of bingo caller. The students are each given a bingo card or worksheet, containing a selection of items from a list created in advance of class by the teacher. The particular items that appear on the bingo worksheets are of course specific to the particular subject being taught.

The class then plays bingo. In some subjects, for example if teacher younger kids the alphabet or to recognize Dolch sight words, the teacher may simply call out items that are printed on the bingo worksheets, and students need to find matches on their cards. In other cases, the teacher may call out a clue or question (such as a Spanish word, or a math problem) and students have to find to solve the problem and find the match (such as the English translation of the Spanish word, or the answer to the math problem).

Of course the key requirement to play any of these versions of bingo in a classroom is a set of suitable bingo worksheets. Obviously it would not be a good use of the teacher's time to spend a long time manually writing out bingo worksheets. Likewise, while it may be possible to buy preprinted educational bingo worksheets, this can get expensive quite quickly if many different worksheets are needed, and in any case, preprinted worksheets may not contain the exact items that the teacher wants for his or her class. The best answer is to use a computer and some bingo worksheet generator software - this way the teacher can quickly and easily prepare custom bingo worksheets whenever they are needed.

The Best Way To Learn To Speak Spanish

Author: Jerry Shannon

Learning the Spanish language means you will need to use much of your memorization ability to retain the words from the language's vocabulary. There are different memorization methods that any learning individual can try but not each of these learning method works for everyone. The different lifestyles of each learner vary and that's why not all methods of learning a language are effective. Sometimes, time constraints interferes with the schedule while for some others, the cost of the learning materials is the main problem.

Fortunately for us, we can still learn Spanish no matter how complicated the reasons are. In fact, the most effective way of learning and mastering a Spanish vocabulary is when you spend little time to it. A matter of three minutes will do. The best thing about it is that it doesn't have to cost you anything at all, just your time. But what is three minutes for someone who has all day to do a dozen of other things?

Gather up your interest to forego other things for the next three minutes. Learning the Spanish vocabulary doesn't have to be difficult but it doesn't have to be quick either. Take a piece of paper and write down the first set of Spanish words with English translation right across it. Chunking is very important at this point but don't chunk 20 words at one time. Forcing yourself to learn 20 Spanish words in a day isn't going to do it. It's even more than three minutes if you try to think about it.

Read the set of words you have in the paper. It would be better if you have only a maximum of five pairs of words at a time. When you have gone over the five Spanish words, try as much as you can to retain each of the English counterparts. Go back once again to the Spanish words and this time, hide the English words. Your recitation is important at this point. Saying the words out loud to make sure that you do know the words and how it is pronounced makes this activity even more effective. After reciting the English counterparts, cover the Spanish words this time and leave the English words open. Do the same recitation, only this time, you are going to recite the Spanish words.

Do this everyday and you will surely have an increased Spanish vocabulary by the end of the week. You don't have to be limited by the Spanish language with this practice method. You can study French, Italian or German and even other languages with this approach. But don't get too excited. Its better you finish one language first before moving on to the next.

Dolch Sight Words Bingo Cards

Author: Sunil Tanna

Sight words are words that students must learn to recognize in order to achieve English reading fluency. They are generally common words, and in many cases are words that can not be sounded out at all, or at least can not be sounded at easily. Because these words are important, common, but can be difficult to learn, teachers therefore tend to place a lot of emphasis on learning them. Over the years a number of list of such sight words have been developed by various researchers, although the most famous is the so-called Dolch Sight Word List, which was first developed by Edward William Dolch phD for his 1948 book, "Problems in Reading" (Dolch developed his list based on their frequency in children's books of the time).

Today teachers use sight word lists in a variety of classroom activities designed to help children learn to recognize the words quickly. As well as normal reading practice, the words are also used on flash cards and in classroom games such as sight word bingo.  The latter being a version of bingo, designed to be played by students (the teacher takes the part of bingo caller), but using bingo cards printed with sight words rather thanthe usual set of numbers.

It is possible to buy preprinted sight word bingo cards, but many teachers prefer to print their own. This not only can work out cheaper in the long run, but this way the teacher can choose the exact items that they want to appear on the bingo cards. Furthermore as students progress, other variants of bingo can also be introduced into classes, such as vocabulary bingo (teacher reads a definition, and students must find a matching word), phonemic awareness bingo (bingo cards with letters are used, teacher reads a word, and students must find the square with the same initial letter), and bingo for other subjects such as math.

Talking English-Spanish ...

Should All World Leaders Speak in English?

Author: A Nutt

Language allows people to communicate, learn, and grow which is the fundamental underpinning of society's progress. In recent years, more people have begun discussing the question of whether all world leaders should speak English. Whether they should speak English or not depends on if there is a need for a common language, and if English is becoming one of the most commonly spoken languages throughout the world.

Many experts believe that there should be one common language that can be used as a method of conversing with people from all countries. It can reduce misunderstandings and help build bridges between cultures. English is the leading worldwide language in such areas as entertainment, science, business, and diplomacy. Approximately 85% of all information in the world is available in English. As well, English is studied as a second language more than any other language of the world. In most careers, speaking English can help one get a promotion, open the door for more opportunities, and earn more money. Governments around the world are providing funding for their citizens to learn English. The reason is not because English is a superior language, but because the language has spread across the globe. For instance, there are more people in China who speak English than in the U.S.A.

Many believe that the proliferation of the English language throughout the world is a result of America's rise as the central superpower. International relations and business are basically tied to the United States. America is an English speaking country so other countries have recognized the value of speaking English when conversing with Americans. The result has been a surge in people learning the English language. According to a recent report by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, "between 96 and 100 percent of people in China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam believe children should learn English." Many see learning English as an essential tool to success. Chris Gibson, the British Council's director for South India, "aims to have every South Indian speaking it by 2010, at which point he believes that English will be a codified world language" In 2007, the International Herald Tribune stated that "English is spoken in some form by three times as many non-native speakers as native speakers." As well, the IHT wrote, "English is a first language for 400 million people, and a fluent second for between 300 and 500 million more.

The trend to learn English suggests that the use of the language will be increasing in the coming years. The Director of Asia for the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that "By 2100, the world will go from a 7,000-language planet to a couple of hundred languages at the most...English will be the major medium of communication in many countries."

It is projected that half the world's people will be speaking English by 2015. Many people believe English is on the path to becoming the world's unofficial language The spread of the English language throughout the world should not only cause world leaders to consider learning the language, but it should also cause the citizens to consider taking advantage of learning English in order keep all opportunities in life available.

How Online English Courses Benefit All Learning Needs

Author: Adriana Noton

The benefits of online English courses reach far and wide. With the difficulty of the language posing numerous stumbling blocks even for those with the native English tongue, strong instruction that works is essential. Whether you are taking English as a second language or you need to increase your communication skills to be a better professional, online courses offer you a great freedom as well as a good opportunity. Kids needing additional English lessons can find that these are the classes that get them over the hump.

Online courses give you the freedom to structure your classes around your day. Some of us keep some pretty wild schedules. There are few classes that allow you morning study one day, afternoon the next, and then evening on the third day. Structuring your classes into your schedule helps you ensure that you will attend your classes online.

Of course, taking English classes online also gives you different modes of learning that aren't as readily available in other class formats. You can find different ways to study, including games, audio and visual stimulation, and sometimes even an online tutor. The host of various tools for learning and completing assignments gives you a chance to push through and accelerate in a manner that is comfortable for you.

English as a second language can be terribly frustrating. Most of the languages around the world consider English to be backward when it comes to the structure of sentences. The way the language places adverbs and adjectives can be opposite when compared to most other languages. This often presents a challenge for those who are trying to master the English language.

Of course, there are plenty of students that are struggling through their school work as they attempt to find the proper way to write and speak their native tongue. In a world full of slang, acronyms, and now with l33t speak (pronounced leet) on the rise it's no wonder that many individuals end their sentences with prepositions and don't understand where a possessive apostrophe belongs. There are many rules of the language, as well as exceptions to those rules, that are not practiced in daily communications among younger generations.

Those of us who are 35 and under have grown up in a world where English was considered the most valuable language to learn and yet our households and friends reflected a totally different language. This can cause issues when it comes to completing high school English classes and can reflect on SAT scores.

When you find a need for English classes one of the best places to look is naturally online. You will need to select a course that is appropriate for your needs. If you're trying to help a struggling student you may want a different course than someone trying to learn conversational English.

Make sure the online English courses come with some sort of support. Many of the programs offer help through chat as well as over the phone. If you are having trouble, it's highly beneficial to have someone to help work out the problem.

Home School Software Enriches the Home Classroom

Author: Sheryl Wood

As a home schooling parent, you face special hurdles that the traditional classroom teacher does not face. Many of the traditional classroom activities that are in curriculum books and on the internet are difficult to do with one or two students. As a result, your children may not benefit from review games or math flashcard races. For competitive kids, games are a great way to learn, but playing a game with a brother or a parent is not always as much fun. One way to incorporate fun learning activities and a little bit of competition in your home school is with home school software.

The beauty of home school software and most types of educational software is that the programs are designed for students to use independently of each other. This means that you do not have to have a large group of students to use the program. Your competitive youngster can race against a computerized opponent or even his own best score using home school software games and activities.

Another benefit of home school software is that, unlike a workbook, it is not a consumable product. If you buy a first grade reading game for your oldest, your middle child and your youngest can use it later when they reach first grade. This allows you to save some of your money as you shop for home schooling supplies.

Not all home school programs are in a game format and you will find many that provide more structured learning. For example, if you would rather not go through the mess of dissection in your home, consider purchasing a simulation program that allows the student to see real graphics of a dissection being performed. You can even couple this program with a few dissections of your own that are a little less messy. As students advance in grades, science software can be used to perform virtual labs or to supplement home school labs.

Home school software is a great way to reinforce concepts you are teaching your students. For instance, when you are teaching your children how to type, you can use a typing program to give them the practice time they need. You will find many math software programs available that help kids reinforce math skills in fun, challenging ways.

When your older students are ready to prepare for the ACT or another college entrance exam, consider purchasing test prep software. This will give your students the edge that other students may not have. It will also save you the expense of enrolling your child in an expensive SAT/ACT prep course. College entrance prep software provides practice questions, practice exams and answer explanations. It is highly individualized to the user's weaknesses and areas needing improvement. Your student can prepare for the test on her own schedule, rather than being tied to a class schedule.

One of the benefits of homeschooling is the chance you have to explore the subjects your children are the most interested in, while at the same time ensuring that the basic core concepts in all subjects are covered. For instance, if your children love to learn about the solar system, you can take the time to explore this subject to its fullest. Since software titles exist for many unique topics, home school software can be used to indulge the special learning interests of individual students. Computer programs are a fun, engaging way for children to explore their interests, and when your kids are interacting with the computer, you are freed to work on other areas of your home school, such as checking papers or working with your other children. With all of the benefits provided by home school software, you will want to set aside some of your curriculum budget to purchase some games and programs for your children to enjoy!
