Arabic numbers are just like English numbers in that they use the digits 0 - 9. When you are learning the Arabic language, you have to learn the symbol and the word for each number, whereas in learning most other languages, you would only need to learn how to spell and say the word for a number. The numbers from 0 -9 in Arabic are:

0 -  ? sifr

1 - wahid ?

2 - ithman ?

3 -  thalatha ?

4 - arba'a ?

5 - khamsa ?

6 - sitta ?

7 - sab'a ?

8 - thamaniya ?

9 - tis'a ?

Just as in English to make 10, you use the numbers 1 and 0, so that you have ??

When making any of the numbers from 10 - 19 in Arabic, you simply place the symbol for one in front of the other number.

The difference between Arabic and English numbers is not just in the symbols and in the spelling of the words. After 19, there is a difference in the way the numbers are made. In order to make any number from 21 to 99, you also reverse the numbers. In order to make the correct symbol of 35, you would not start with the symbol for 3. Instead you would write it as ??      

Unless you are really familiar with the way words and numbers are written in the Arabic language, it is very likely you would read the numbers backwards because when writing in this language you write from right to left. Even though you do place the symbol for one in front of another number in Arabic, you do not read it in the same way either. You would not say fourteen in Arabic. Rather you would read it as four ten because you also read from right to left.

In addition to reversing the numbers to form numbers from 21 - 99, when you read these numbers you inset the word "wa" between the numbers. Wa means and in Arabic to when reading 53, which actually looks like 35, you would say three and fifty. 

When you use numbers in combination with nouns, then the number and the noun have to agree. The rule for this is that a number in masculine gender must agree with a noun in feminine gender and vice versa. To say three boys in Arabic, you would use the feminine form of the number so that the words would be thalathatu awlaad. To say three girls, you would use the masculine form of the number, as in thalathu banat. This means that in addition to learning the words for each of the numbers, you also need to learn the masculine and feminine forms of each one.

The ordinal numbers, such as first, second, third and so on are used like adjectives in the Arabic language. Therefore they also take the masculine and feminine forms. When you use the ordinal numbers to 10, both the number and the noun must be in the same gender. However after the 10th place, you only change the first word to match the correct gender.

To conjugate each verb you change the ending of the infinitive to match the person. For example, I sing is yo canto and he sings is el canta.

There are specific endings to use in conjugating regular verbs.

While you can learn the endings for regular verbs in Spanish, this is not the case with irregular verbs. There are no hard and fast rules that you can apply when conjugating these verbs and you just have to memorize the conjugations.  The irregular verbs include tenir( to have), ser (to be) and ir (to go).

The spelling and the pronunciation of the various words used in common greetings can also be different depending on the dialect of Arabic that you learn. Just about all Arab speakers can understand this form of the language, even though they may consider it a formal type of speech. You want to know an easy way to pass or excel in the TestDaF? Allow me to share my experiences and system on how I managed to conquer the difficult TestDaF examination, the German examination for foreigners.

The first thing I did was to set up a TestDaF plan. I prepared for the different sections of the TestDaF rather than doing a holistic approach. To prepare for reading comprehension, I read Der Spiegel daily, selecting articles that had themes in the TestDaF. I borrowed books and magazines from libraries so I could familiarise myself with formal standard German used in the examination.

To prepare for the listening comprehension section, I listened to themes in speeches by Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as German podcasts and songs, and Der Spiegel TV Online. I did this every day. I listened and then tried to decipher what they were saying. Later, this proved invaluable and useful because the listening comprehension in the TestDaF is actually slower and clearer than are the programmes on German TV.

Then I prepared for the writing section. I wrote an essay daily. The thing about the TestDaF is that writing can be simply prepared for. There will always be graphical explanation. There will also always be an argumentative theme to write on, and so you should prepare for that too. The planning, preparation, and thinking are the same, be it English or French, but this time you remember to express yourself in German. One good thing about the TestDaF is that it does not test you for grammar, but tests your fluency and command of the language instead. Hence, not knowing the articles of nouns will not be as important here as opposed to most other European language examinations.

I then wanted to prepare for the oral aspect. Note that there are only two major ways to do so effectively. What are they? Recitation and practice. I recited many German texts aloud, using books to get the texts and magazines as well. And I also spoke German to people as often and as many times as I could, using various vocabulary words and grammatical structures. That was how I prepared myself for the Testdaf.

There are other easy ways of preparing yourself for the TestDaF, and these may work for you as well. For example, you could do an online course that specialises in preparing you. Many are courses that require you to pay some fee and yet there are also some which are free. Furthermore, if you have time, a long-term approach is best: read more, listen more to German radio, speak more German and find more chances to express yourself, surf and use the Internet in German.

If, on the other hand, you have not much time, and the TestDaF is coming soon, the best way to prepare for the TestDaF is to now memorise key phrases and key words that you will use for writing and speaking. "This graph presents" and "upward and downward trends" and other stock phrases are the stock phrases you need to memorise if you wish to survive the TestDaF. Memorise key terms and phrases for the writing and speaking sections and regurgitate these at every chance you get. This is a technique employed not just by TestDaF takers but by students and examtakers globally, so have no fear.
